By Eric Jager & Narrated by Rene Auberjonois
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Genre: Historical True Crime
I decided to listen to this on Audible on a whim and I am glad I did! Eric Jager is the author of The Last Duel, which was recently made into a movie starring Adam Driver; so when I saw that he wrote this, I thought it might be good. I will say that I have given it 5 stars on a sliding scale! I would give it 3 stars if you are listening to it purely for true crime, 4 stars if you enjoy true crime and medieval history, and a glowing 5 if you also have a working knowledge of and interest in French history specifically.
The true crime in question is the murder of Louis I, Duke of Orléans, brother of King Charles VI(one of many mad kings) of the House of Valois, in the early 15th century. I found this especially interesting because so much of the media I have consumed about French monarchy history has been from the late 16th century and on (think the reign of Catherine de Medici-the demise of Marie Antoinette).
This tale has it all: scandal, adultery, corruption, betrayal, murder and civil war. It was exciting, and I felt fully immersed in the setting and mood, thanks to both the author and narrator.
I would highly recommend!
